the 30 things post

i tried to illustrate everything for this brief.... which was kindof annoying but hey whatever. i put off doing this post and hence subsequent posts just beause of the sheer amounts of pictures and scans that i would have to photoshop, as it is all of these pictures were taken on my phone and cleaned up some with photoshop.

1 Do a drawing for a matchbox

a matchbook man makes a crude drawing for the matchbox girl, could it be love? i dont think so... the matchbox is wearing hooker boots.

2 Write your name in water

 two options here either octopus ink or coral... i wrote my name.


3 Words fail me

 i tried to use water to damage to make the words fade and then i would use that for a collage like this, but unfortunately so i partially obscured the words with paint.

4 Record yourself doing something backwards

 had the idea of a motion blur effect going backwards but i didnt look good thenm i had the idea of a more futuristic neon colour scheme and it looks better, so i roughed it out on photoshop.

5 The end: travel to the end, take photographs

 this one was hard beause it basically told you to take photos and of course i wanted to illustrate, so i came up with a narrativeof a girl with a camera who stumbles across an evil wormholish thing, images were drawn on the computer, i wish i could find the file!

6 Draw every chair you sit on today

 continuous line drawing, someone else had the same idea and was praised for it, i wish i had put mine up now.

7 Dress as someone else

 here i am dressed as myself and then as my friend anna, not much difference really ;)

8 Don’t tread on the cracks

 i was gonna do a picture pook of this ghost story i came up with but while i was making the book i bleached some pages and then left them outside to dry and it rained so it just smelled disgusting. so i just did a few images of this guy stepping on the cracks, the idea being that these cracks are so evil, whats inside them?

9 Learn a poem by heart

 yeah so i wrote this one as well as learning it by heart, i kinda write haikus all the time, none about nature though, during my alevels i would always write them about loosing my biology homework;

10 Invent a new word and give its definition

this word came to me before the brief and i thought it was funny.

11 Measure things. Lots of things. Record

this is a lovebite, you heard me, i'm measuring how long an arm is using lovebites as an abitrary unit.

12 Write and perform a one minute play for 3 characters

 instead of the play, because matt has it, may i present my notes for it. :)

 tutors didnt get this one... the flowers come out when theyre in private and they are little people.

 bleach spreading on brown paper... i dont know why its blue in the picture >.<

 this was done with the help of a very good websit that i would reccomend highly for illustrators week in pictures

27 book art bookshop was closed when i got there... the website seems interesting though will have to have a look, especially for the books project.

28-29 these videos are funny and well worth checking out. made me think about typography wich will be useful quite soon!

30 Museum of everything

that place is so mad, and i loved it i was reallyinspired to draw when i got home, the only thing is i went at a really empty time so the whole thing seemed really scary because it was so empty i got out of there pretty quickly after i'd seen the taxidermy room... oh and that music playing... OMG it drove me nuts!

kinda fun but i dont like how all the friends i made did fine art, i guess this is just the kind of person i connect with..

i found the assingnment really hard actually doing 30 things was a real creatively draining experience but i guess i'm just gonna have to get used to starting ideas and not being able to fopllow them all through as much as i would want to. some of my personal favorites from what i made were my ugly dog and the illustration i did for dont step on the cracks. ive decided to make the ugly dog into an animation!!! how scary!! ive never actually done an animation before that had a full plot, the animation is gonna last about 3 minutes and i'm gonna have to work really hard to get this done for friday.... i may have to leave the eid celebrations early tonight

daily doodles 1

Okay so ive started doing this thing where i take some of my doodles and do some digital stuff to them for practice, i thought might as well post them here, i'm trying to do at least one a day.

yeah well... this is kinda lame but i may as well post it

All my work is illustrative; therefore it makes sense for me to go into a pathway that would support that and inspire me to push my work further and eventually gain a career from it doing something I love.
I have tried my best to embrace the essence of each of the disciplines as I went through the rotations but I always found myself returning to narratives and communications through my work. I’ve always wanted to say things with my work, and for my a level essay I wrote about how Paula Rego uses narratives in her work to instil them with a deeper meaning and draw in the attention of the viewer and intrigue them. For this reason I was considering the fine art pathway, of course only slightly as Paula has said herself that she disapproves of fine art snobbery and believes that illustrations are some of the best artwork.
In vis-com for example for our first task (creating work based off a random word) I decided to make a narrative storybook exploring the ideas brought up by our group discussion. For the second task we were told to use found images to crate a narrative; I approached this in a slightly different way but found again that I was illustrating a short story, for the last project which was a communication I decided to make a fish and some other animals out of paper to show the fish imagining itself out of its bowl, and I’ve considered making this into an animation (I’ve finished the storyboard and hope to pick up on the project later)
The next pathway was 3d spatial, which personally I didn’t engage with at all, I’ve always prided myself on my ability to make things so that I could use them as props in paintings I made but the idea of the installation or the smaller modular designs didn’t really speak to me. I really enjoy figurative work, so inventing new and abstract things in 3d didn’t appeal to me, and I wasn’t too happy with the drawings I made there either for the same reason- not figurative.
As you might imagine this was the problem I had with fashion textiles too, I ended up making some very illustrative works for that experimenting with fragile cutouts. And while I enjoyed the way they made us draw allot because of the great drawings I got out of them and learned about making smaller sketchbooks (which is something I’ve started doing in my normal work now), I think that it will be an experience that I learn from and don’t return to, it was actually very useful to be working in a really disciplined and directed way expanding my artistic vocabulary. Still since I struggled with making anything for the body other than my sunglasses, I don’t think this are is for me.
Finally in fine art I found myself wanting to paint a portrait, because that’s what I’ve always done any why I’ve considered myself an artist instead of an illustrator for so long, then the tutor came over and said in not so many words; no portraits… I was stumped and disappointed, I kind of lost my train of thought with the project, in the end I found myself making another little storybook, this time I thought I was quite successful.
So all in all i’ve been making storybooks and illustrations this whole time whatever i’ve been doing, so why stop now? My choice: vis-com.

okay so i havent written for a while (also i can add pictures now so lololol)

i havent been updating this blog for a while and i know thats very bad.

okay so ive been doing lots of work blah blah blah fine art is smelly.

they wont let me do portraits, and thats kindof all i do so... yeah, its not an option anymore really, which pretty much makes up my mind. i'm gonna do viscom.

in related news ive been to allot of exhibitions recently

firstly the harrier jumpjets hanging in the main hall of he tate britain are terrifying, one is hanging by just a cable and kinda swings to and fro.

ive been to the tate modern to see all of those seed  things too, they look really nice, i wish id got a chance to walk through them before the exhibition was fenced off for health and safty reasons, one of my favorioute sensations it plunging your hand into a bag of seeds.

ive been to the move exhibition at the hayward gallery which i would highly reccomend. its very fun, i went with my friend as part of the press which was a new experience for me as while i just played with everything she wrote notes and came up with some quite clever remarks, i was impressed. while there i wore a gorrilla costume and someone thought that i must be part of the show and took my picture and decided to send it to the gallery. i also showed off my hulahoopingskills, heres a quick video and pics from the day

so yeah i havent written on this thing for a while. maily because i have nothing to say, i'm working very hard in the studio, but it seems everything i'm doing is 3d, so i got concerned i'd be steered that way come assesments. but actually the fashion ppl say that my work is illustrative :)

Viscom completed: advance to level 2

so this concludes the first 'creative pathway' and i have to say that I'm allot more pleased with it this time around.

this week we had to communicate something that cant be done with words and immediately my inner schoolgirl jumped at the whole 'i cant tell him that i love him, so i'll send him a letter thing' but then almost as an afterthought Wendy said; NO LOVE STORIES!!! :( its too boring and predictable or something

so trying to connect the project back to the original idea i decided to go for I'm not in love with you, i'm obsessed with you and its creepy and you should be scared. and i started my book along these lines... but really after my first week spent in the abyss i wanted to do something more cheerful, so i made a very cartoony brainstorm of all the worst and clichéd ideas i could, just trying to choose one and do it in a really creative and unpredictable way...

i decided on; 'I'm a fish and i want to get out of my bowl'

i started by thin king of the ways that the average fish would actually be able to communicate at all with its owner, i thought of Morse code bubbles, writing on a dirty tank but then eventually realised that the fish itself wouldn't realistically be able to do any of these things. what a fish can do however is imagine...

as sappy as that sounds...

anyway so the work i settled on was an illustration of a fish imagining itself outside of its bowl... so i drew it in my sketchbook and added some colour and thought; its finished! damn what am i gonna do for the rest of the week!

anyway so i just started making all of the animals that the fish imagines himself as, out of paper. i actually hadn't done anything like that before and everyone thought i was really good at it so i just ran with it and got some really positive crit for it on Friday
